Abstract
Realistic initial conditions for the injected material are crucial for modelling disruption mitigation scenarios using shattered pellet injection (SPI). Therefore, currently employed pellet break-up models need to be validated with experimental data. In this contribution, we present fragmentation analysis of 170 SPI pellets, fired with the pellet injector that is now installed at ASDEX Upgrade. Statistical parameters in the experiment are compared to simulated fragment sprays, with focus on fragment sizes. The effect of normal pellet impact velocity on different post-shattering parameters is discussed. Our results show that there is a significant discrepancy between measured distributions and those predicted by the currently employed pellet break-up models. Furthermore, the impact of shattering geometry is discussed.
