Abstract
Multispectral imaging systems have the potential to provide useful experimental input to kinetic runaway electron models and assist in their validation. Emission profiles in the poloidal plane can be constructed for multiple atomic lines simultaneously, providing a benchmark for collisional-radiative models. With suitable filters, synchrotron radiation emitted by runaways can be separated from the line emission. These profiles can be matched by synthetic diagnostics such as SOFT [1] to extract information on regions of the energy and spatial distribution of the relativistic electrons. A feasibility study for quantitative imaging of plasmas in runaway scenarios is conducted at TCV using the MultiCam system. This device features 4 cameras each equipped with a high quality narrowband interference filter. They share a common view of the tokamak plasma as incoming light is relayed through beamsplitters. Progress in the tomographic reconstruction of 2D emission profiles and uncertainties in the absolute emissivity are discussed. Furthermore, for relatively high densities and loop voltages synchrotron patterns with clear geometrical features are observed in quiescent runaway scenarios. Vertical position scans of the runaway beam result in a change of the pattern shape, an effect which is closely reproduced by SOFT. Matching of synthetic and experimental images for shot 64584 indicate that the observed light originates from electrons with a high pitch angle (Θ ≈ 0.5) and momentum (p/me*c ≈ 50). Lastly, an outlook on the use of the optical cavity based next generation of the Multispectral Advanced Narrowband Tokamak Imaging System (MANTIS+) [2] for runaway studies is provided. [1] M.
